BACOLOD City – A man was shot dead while four others were wounded in a police anti-illegal gambling operation in Ilog, Negros Occidental on Saturday, March 18.

Suspect Abundio Redoble, 35, of Barangay Dancalan, Ilog succumbed to a gunshot wound on his chest.

His brother John Mark, 25; Samson Tagapan, 63; and a 16-year-old boy sustained gunshot wounds, police said.

On the other hand, Police Captain Thurslie Castillo, Ilog police chief, sustained multiple stab wounds to his back, side, elbow, and leg.

The Ilog police, led by Castillo, carried out a raid after receiving reports that about 30 individuals were allegedly playing cara y cruz or tumbo in Barangay Dancalan, according to Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) spokesperson Captain Judesses Catalogo.

The raid resulted to a scuffle.

Catalogo said Castillo was able to get a hold of some suspects. However, the Redoble brothers and Tagapan resisted and stabbed the police chief.

Castillo, in response, drew out his service firearm and shot the suspects.

A police investigation has been launched.

As of this writing, Castillo was already in stable condition./PN
