BACOLOD City – A public cemetery in Barangay Handumanan has become a dumping ground of medical waste.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez discovered this during a spot inspection on Sunday night, March 19.

“ I saw the very poor state of Handumanan Public Cemetery. That is why I had a meeting this afternoon (March 20) to thresh out the problems,” Benitez said yesterday.

Part of the cemetery has become a medical waste disposal site for the City Health Office (CHO), the local chief executive said.

“This has to stop. We will find a permanent solution to medical waste. It should not be there,” he said.

“I will discuss this with the Department of Public Services. We must have a medical waste disposal system,” Benitez stressed.

The mayor conducted the spot inspection at night to better see the whole situation of the Handumanan Public Cemetery.

“It speaks a lot about how we treat our dead. It is very poor,” said Benitez./PN
