Iloilo capitol allots P2.5M for WVRAA 2023 medalists

ILOILO – The provincial government allocated P2.5 million in cash rewards to athletes who won medals in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet 2023 in Aklan from April 26 to 30. 

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. said giving cash rewards to Iloilo athletes excelling in sports competitions – sanctioned by the Department of Education, the Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippine Olympic Committee – is mandated by Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-217. It also covers coaches, assistant coaches, trainers and chaperones.

The cash reward will be given directly to each athlete, even in team sports, as long as they are medalists (either gold, silver or bronze).

“Kada isa gid ina, indi puede nga huraraya ninyo,” added Defensor.

Iloilo was the overall champion of the 2023 WVRAA Meet.

In the official results released by the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 for regular events (both for elementary and secondary), demo sports (both for elementary and secondary), and paragames, Iloilo had the most gold medals in each category.

The province bagged a total of 229 gold, 154 silver and 100 bronze medals.

“Congratulations sa aton mga athletes, sa aton mga kabataan, for a job well done,” said Defensor.

WVRAA medalists will be receiving the following:

For athletes

* Gold – P5,000

* Silver – P3,000

* Bronze – P2,000

For coaches

* Gold – P5,000

* Silver – P3,000

* Bronze – P2,000

For assistant coaches

* Gold – P3,000

* Silver – P2,5000

* Bronze – P2,000

For trainers

* Gold – P5,000

* Silver – P3,000

* Bronze – P2,000

For chaperones

* Gold – P2,000

* Silver – P1,500

* Bronze – P1,000

Athletes receiving the reward and recognition must meet the following requirements:

* He/she must be a Filipino citizen.

* He/she must be a bona fide resident of Iloilo and must have duly represented the province in the sports competitions in which he/she participated.

* Has brought pride and honor to the province because of his/her achievement.

* A gold/silver/bronze medalist or a combination thereof in regional, national and international competitions in any sports discipline event recognized and sanctioned by the Department of Education, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.

* He/she must either be in individual, dual or team events.

The documentary requirements are the following:

* Certified true copy of birth certificate issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

* Barangay certification of residency or voter’s affidavit

* Valid ID of the awardee(s)

* In case an athlete is a minor, parents or guardians’ voter affidavit and valid identification card.

* Proof of winning (medal, trophy, certificate of award, and awarding ceremony picture)./PN
