INTEGRATED energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC), in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE), provided rainwater collection systems to 16 schools in Caluya, Antique.

A total of eighty units of 1,000-liter bulktainers were installed in daycare centers and elementary and secondary schools in the islands of Semirara, Sibay, Caluya, Liwagao, and Sibolo, benefitting 5,966 students and teachers. Since the project’s inception in 2021, it has made significant strides in providing reliable water supply in educational institutions.

Harvested rainwater can be used for day-to-day activities like watering plants, cleaning, and water for toilets and other school facilities. Considered as a climate action project, it augments water supply during emergencies, especially when schools are converted into evacuation centers during typhoons.

“The project promotes water conservation and disaster preparedness in Caluya, and also raises environmental awareness among students,” said Janesto Diaz Jr., SMPC Environmental and Biodiversity head.

SMPC’s rainwater collection system initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) 6, which ensures availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all./PN
