ILOILO CITY— Yesterday, June 9, was the last day for vendors of the Iloilo Terminal Market, popularly known as “Super,” to vacate the market to give way for its demolition and eventually, redevelopment.
As of this writing, Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) head Maricel Mabaquiao said 95 percent of the market vendors already transferred to their respective temporary stalls and resumed doing business while the rest were still dismantling their original stalls.
Mabaquiao noted that everyone was cooperative, even those who were previously against the redevelopment of the market.
Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed his gratitude to the market vendors for their cooperation.
“I am very grateful for the vendors of the Iloilo Terminal Market (Super) for their cooperation. All of them have already vacated the premises of the market today in preparation for the demolition of the same and the construction of a new modern market by SMDC. Salamat gid!” said Treñas.
The city government, through a public-private partnership, has partnered with SM Development Corporation (SMDC) for the redevelopment of the two biggest markets of the city – the Super and the Iloilo Central Market or Tienda Mayor.
On the other hand, Mabaquiao noted that some of the vendors have modified their temporary stalls for good product display as well as for their convenience.
Some of them added elevation to their stalls in preparation for possible flooding this rainy season.
Mabaquiao added that water supply is already in place and there will be water tankers to be filled in for the temporary stalls./PN
