KALIBO, Aklan — The municipal government here will intensify its campaign against stray dogs and cats, a Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member said.

SB member Ariel Fernandez said the local government will “fund the rehabilitation of the dog vehicle and the municipal animal pound.”

Fernandez said dogs and cats wandering on the streets of Kalibo cause many vehicular accidents. He did not give figures.

These homeless animals, the municipal councilor said, also cause health and environmental problems.

Stray dogs and cats often drag garbage into the streets when they scavenge for food, Fernandez said.

He added that, sometimes, they become an eyesore to residents and tourists.

Fernandez said the municipal government should also train workers in catching impounding stray dogs and cats.

These plans, he said, were discussed during the recent Municipal Rabies Control Committee meeting with Mayor William Lachica.

Meanwhile, the SB member appealed to pet owners to take their pets to a veterinarian and have them vaccinated against rabies to fight the spread of the disease. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
