Inclement weather displaces 2,400 Antique residents

ANTIQUE – Ten of the 18 towns in the province reported flooding and landslides due to heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon “Goring,” according to the Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

These towns were Belison, San Jose, Patnongon, Sibalom, Barbaza, Valderrama, Hamtic, Bugasong, Laua-an, and Tobias Fornier.

A partial count of 637 families, or 2,456 residents, evacuated.

The number is expected to increase as some towns have yet to submit their situational reports, said Dr. Broderick Train, PDRRMO chief.

Further, a nine-year-old girl from Valderrama was reported missing.

“May isa ka missing diri sa [Barangay] Iglinab, Valderrama… So far, wala man kita reported incidents dira ya sa kadagatan,” said Train.

The girl and her father attempted to traverse the river, but the father accidentally lost grip of his child and was swept away by the strong floodwater current.

Meanwhile, classes were suspended yesterday, Aug. 29 , in the following:

* Barbaza – all levels, both public and private schools

* Laua-an – elementary to senior high school, both public and private schools

* Tobias Fornier – all levels, both public and private schools

* Belison – all levels, both public and private schools

* Libertad – pre-school to senior high school, both public and private schools

* Patnongon – all levels, both public and private schools

* Hamtic – all levels, both public and private schools

* Valderrama – all levels, both public and private schools

* Culasi – elementary to senior high school, both public and private schools

* Sibalom – all levels, both public and private schools

* San Jose – all levels, both public and private schools

* Pandan – all levels, both public and private schools

* San Remigio – all levels, both public and private schools

* Tibiao – all levels, both public and private schools

* Bugasong – all levels, both public and private schools

* Caluya – all levels, both public and private schools

* Anini-y – all levels, both public and private schools

* Sebaste – all levels, both public and private schools

Gov. Rhodora Cadiao also declared a suspension of work at the provincial capitol yesterday.

“Due to the overly inclement weather conditions and for precautionary measures against the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) associated with Typhoon ‘Goring’, resulting in landslides and flooding in certain areas of the province of Antique, work in the provincial government of Antique is hereby temporarily suspended,” Cadiao’s Executive Order 178 read.

The said executive order is not applicable to those employees in the PDRRMO, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital, and infirmary hospitals in every municipality of the province, each of which shall maintain a skeletal force for emergencies and eventualities.

Further, employees and staff of PSWDO and PDRRMO who rendered work during the temporary suspension of work of the offices of the provincial government, pursuant to this executive order, shall be entitled to their overtime pay in cash or compensatory time off./PN
