SEMIRARA Island, Caluya, Antique – To nurture the health and wellness of its host communities, a total of 1,112 patients were served in the three-day medical and dental mission by integrated energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC), in partnership with Tabang Antique Medical Missions and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) Quezon City Chapter on Aug. 2 to 4, 2023.
Residents of barangays Semirara, Tinogboc and Alegria were provided with a wide range of essential medical and dental services including tooth extraction, oral prophylaxis, tooth filling, dental X-ray, pediatric and internal medicine consultations, and eye checkups. Participants also received free medicines, while children were given complimentary toothbrushes, toothpaste, ice cream, and loot bags.
The joint medical and dental mission was made possible by a 17-strong team of doctors, dentists, and nurses, with 11 coming from PDA QC, four from SMPC Hospital, and two from Tabang Antique Medical Missions. Local government units (LGUs) of the participating barangays also assisted in mounting the event, while 11 community-based SMPC scholars from Occidental Mindoro State College, University of Antique, and University of the Philippines-Visayas served as additional volunteers.
“Masaya ako kasi kahit papaano, sa mga serbisyo na libre na tulad nito na dala ng SMPC, makakabawas ako ng gastos,” said Marciano Madarcos, resident of Barangay Tinogboc.
Dr. Egidio Elio, Provincial Board member and Tabang Antique Medical Missions executive director, thanked SMPC and PDA QC Chapter for making medical services available within reach, especially in communities where access to health care is much needed.
“The turnout for this quarter’s mission was heartwarming. Witnessing the community come together and seeing our team’s dedication to serve reinforces our commitment to these endeavors,” said Dr. Reginald Mia, SMPC medical director.
Since the easing of pandemic restriction in 2022, SMPC’s resumption of medical mission partnerships have benefited about 2,300 patients in Semirara Island and Caluya./PN
