Eala-Alcantara tandem bags Asiad tennis bronze

MANILA – Alex Eala captured her second tennis bronze medal in the 19th Asian Games. She and Francis Alcantara finished second runner up in tennis mixed team event on Friday at the HOC Tennis Centre 1 in Hangzhou, China.

Eala and Alcantara fell short of moving on to the gold medal match after suffering a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Liang En-shuo and Huang Tsung-hao of Chinese Taipei in the semifinals round.

The Philippine tandem trailed early at 1-3 in the opening set but they rallied back to tie the score at 5-all, but the Chinese Taipei pair scored two crucial victories for a first set win.

Chinese Taipei started strong in the second set for a 3-1 lead. Philippines rallied to within 2-3 but the Chinese Taipei came up with finishing blows to reach the finals.

Eala earlier won a bronze medal in the women’s singles event after suffering a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 loss to China’s Qinwen Zheng in the semifinals on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Fernando Jose Casares and Andrew Kim Remolino failed to land a podium finish in the men’s individual triathlon event on Friday morning.

Casares landed at 10th place in the competition after finishing the race in two hours and 53 seconds, while Remolino is at 13th place with two hours, four minutes and 47 seconds clocking.

In boxing, Marjon Pianar failed to progress to the quarterfinals round after a unanimous decision defeat to Uzbekistan’s Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev in the men’s 71 kilogram event.

In shooting, Franchette Shayne Quiroz and Elvie Baldivinos failed to reach the finals round after their 29th and 56th place finishes, respectively, in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event.

Jayson Valdez also faltered in the men’s 50-meter rifle 3 position events after finishing at 45th place during the qualification round with a 555-16x score./PN
