ILOILO – Outstanding farmers and fisherfolks across Iloilo were recognized by the provincial government through the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) during the Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Day held on Friday, Oct. 6, at Punta Villa Resort in Iloilo City.

The winners in various categories were:

* Outstanding Integrated Farming System – Eduardo T. Tresico (Tigbauan)

* Outstanding Fisherfolk – Helen R. Balajadia (Concepcion)

* Outstanding Livestock Farmer – Jonny L. Diane (Santa Barbara)

* Outstanding Farmers Association – Igbaras Federation of Farmers Association (Igbaras)

* Outstanding Fisherfolk Association – Punta Buri MPA Small Fisherfolks Association (Ajuy)

* Outstanding Small Water Irrigation System Association – Mapili Farmers Association (San Enrique)

The individual winners each received a plaque and a P15,000 cash prize, while the winning associations were also given a plaque and a P40,000 cash prize. The runners-up were also given consolation prizes.

Vice Gov. Christine Garin, Board Member Rolito Cajilig, Board Member Matt Palabrica, PAO chief Dr. Ildefonso Toledo, and representatives from the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources led the awarding.

Toledo emphasized the event’s goal of honoring farmers and fishers for their significant contributions to the province’s economy.

“We consider them as invaluable partners. Even with limited assistance, they persistently support our endeavors,” said Toledo.

He added that the provincial government has several upcoming programs planned for agriculture and fisheries.

Currently, it is implementing the Agriculture and Fisheries Extension System, aiming to boost the province’s food production.

Gov. Arthur Defensor, Jr. has also allotted P15 million for the hybrid seed distribution for the first cropping, while procuring an additional P15 million is ongoing for the second cropping.

The event attracted over 3,000 farmers and fishers and was part of Iloilo Province’s week-long celebration. (With a report from Balita Halin sa Kapitolyo)/PN
