NegOcc records swine deaths anew

BACOLOD City – The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) of Negros Occidental has recorded new hog mortalities.

PVO head Dr. Placeda Lemana yesterday said they have recorded swine mortalities in the towns of Hinoba-an and La Castellana last September.

However, they were unable to determine if those were caused by hog cholera or African Swine Fever (ASF).

Lemana explained that as part of pre-sentineling procedures a thorough disinfection and cleaning of hog pens are required, especially for the hog raisers hit by swine diseases a few months ago.

Despite the reported hog deaths, PVO personnel are now roaming around the province to identify hog raisers who are qualified for the sentinelling program.

Meanwhile, some backyard hog raisers in the province cannot be restrained and have resumed raising hogs.

The provincial veterinarian advised raisers to inform the PVO should they start to repopulate to ensure they are compliant with the specific guidelines. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
