ANTIQUE – More than 400 road accidents have occurred in the province of Antique so far this year, a 19.57 percent increase compared in 2022.

There were 446 road accidents here as of the Oct. 15 data of the Antique Police Provincial Office (APPO), while 373 were recorded in the same period last year.

Of this number, 226 were cases of reckless imprudence resulting (RIR) to damage to property, 34 cases higher than in 2022; RIR to physical injury followed with 199 cases from 170 in 2022; and RIR to homicide with 21 cases from 11 cases in 2022.

Most road accidents, 134 cases, occurred in the municipality of San Jose de Buenavista, followed by Hamtic with 51 cases and Pandan with 50 cases.

APPO data further showed that 85 percent of the 446 road accidents were caused by human error, including driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor, distracted driving, and overspeeding.

Only nine percent of road accidents in Antique were due to the road condition, and six percent resulted from mechanical error.

With these, the APPO is urging motorists to exercise utmost caution./PN
