ILOILO City – Over 25,700 kilograms or around 20 tons of assorted garbage were collected by the 320 street sweepers deployed by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in private and public cemeteries across the city as of Thursday, Nov. 2.
CENRO head Engr. Neil Ravena said the volume of waste could still increase with people still visiting their departed loved ones until yesterday, Nov. 3.
“Mostly mga food wrappers kag mga food packaging materials ang aton na-collect. After three days we will collect naman sang mga nagkalalaya nga mga flowers nga ginhalad nila sa ila mga relatives sa sementeryo. Ini naman ya mga organic materials,” Ravena said.
The CENRO head said the garbage collected this year’s “Fiesta Minatay” was notably more than the waste gathered in 2022 due to the long weekend.
“Mas damo ini subong kay siguro long weekend kita. Since Sunday (Oct. 29) may na-monitor na kami nga nagbisita na sa aton nagkalain-lain nga sementeryo. Tapos nag-holiday sang Monday because of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, so may nagbisita man,” Ravena added.
He further said that this year’s “Fiesta Minatay” observance in the city was clean and safe.
“So far clean and safe. May isa lang kita ka insidente, ginakasubo ta gid nga may nahulugan sang construction debris didto sa may Tanza. Minor injury man lang ato. Nagapasalamat man kita sa aton pumuluyo sa pagkooperar sa pagselebrar sining Fiesta Minatay,” said Ravena./PN
