A rising threat to community safety

THE RECENT elections in Iloilo City have ushered in a disturbing development: the rise of barangay officials with alleged links to the illegal drug trade. This matter, highlighted by the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), is not just a local concern but a national alarm. The significant drug bust in Barangay Camalig, where three kilos of shabu valued at a staggering P20.4 million were confiscated, underscores the severity of the situation.

This successful operation, marking the largest seizure of illegal drugs in Panay Island, is commendable. However, despite ongoing efforts and notable successes in drug operations, the battle seems to be getting tougher. The involvement of barangay officials in the drug trade poses a complex challenge, creating a protective umbrella for illegal activities and potentially influencing more individuals to join these nefarious networks.

The revelation that some elected barangay officials might be financed by narcotics dealers is alarming. It raises critical questions about the integrity and accountability of local governance. If community leaders, who should be the vanguards of law and order, become embroiled in illegal activities, it undermines the very fabric of societal trust and safety.

The ICPO’s strategy to intensify barangay intelligence networks is a step in the right direction. Close monitoring of drug personalities and their movements is essential in dismantling these networks. Continued vigilance is crucial. Community involvement and awareness can significantly bolster law enforcement efforts.

But the illegal drugs problem transcends Iloilo City. The Police Regional Office 6’s report of a staggering P274-million worth of illegal drugs seized across the region in just 10 months highlights a widespread problem. With Bacolod City Police Office recording high confiscation values, it’s clear that the drug menace is pervasive in the region.

The election of barangay officials linked to illegal drugs is a concerning development that requires a multifaceted response. Law enforcement agencies must continue their vigilant efforts, but there’s also a need for stricter scrutiny and accountability in the election process of local officials. Community awareness and involvement are vital. This is not just a battle for the police; it’s a fight for every citizen who values the safety and integrity of their community.
