ILOILO – Multi-award Police Captain Charlie Sustento Jr., the “Best Junior Police Commission Officer for Operations” in 2017, has resigned from the Philippine National Police (PNP) after nearly 20 years in the service.
His resignation was officially approved effective Dec. 15, 2023 by PNP chief General Benjamin Acorda Jr.
Initially planning to resign in September 2023, Sustento was persuaded by senior officers to hang on.
However, he ultimately decided to submit his resignation letter in November 2023 to prioritize his family.
This Dec. 30, 2023, would have marked his 20th year in service.
“I have done my part…in my 20 years sa PNP. I have done so much sa organization,” said Sustento.
Sustento was dismissed from the service in November 2017 while serving as chief of the Ajuy, Iloilo police station.
The dismissal was due to grave misconduct charges filed by Richard Samontosa and Janice Braga, who accused Sustento and his team of policemen various violations, including grave misconduct and abuse of authority, when he was the police chief of Dumangas town in 2014.
He was reinstated to the police service on Dec. 6, 2021 after fending off the administrative charges.
During his four-year suspension from service, Sustento said he encountered new opportunities “with the help sang private citizens and stakeholders nga nabuligan ko sang ara pa ako sa serbisyo”, and this influenced his decision to focus on his family.
On Aug. 14, 2017, then PNP Director General Ronald Dela Rosa (now senator) awarded Sustento as “Best Junior Police Commission Officer for Operations” in line with the 116th Police Service Anniversary.
Under Sustento, the Ajuy police station topped the 2017 first quarter performance evaluation of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
Ajuy police station was also hailed as “best in law enforcement operation” against loose firearms from January to March of 2017./PN
