ILO Convention 190 ratification

WE IN THE Kilusang Mayo Uno warmly welcome the Senate’s concurrence on the ratification of ILO Convention 190. We consider this as a first step towards strengthening the policies against harassment and violence in the world of work.

This Convention is a historic and important instrument as it is the world’s first international standard that aims to put an end to violence and harassment in the world of work. The Convention recognizes “the right of everyone to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence and harassment.”

The ratification of ILO Convention No. 190 will provide an enabling environment for relevant national agencies, non-government organizations, trade unions, women’s rights advocates, and civil society groups to come up with more concrete monitoring mechanisms and programs on workplace-related violence and harassment.

Borrowing the Convention’s declaration: “violence and harassment in the world of work can constitute a human rights violation or abuse, and that violence and harassment is a threat to equal opportunities, is unacceptable and incompatible with decent work.”

The Convention extends its protection to informal workers and LGBTQ workers also providing mechanisms for grievances and redress.

We call on Philippine legislators to speedily pass enabling laws which run consistent to the principles laid down by the Convention.

We congratulate every individual and organization who campaigned for the adoption and ratification of the Convention. We enjoin you to continue our collective work for decent wages, regular jobs and our right to organize and to bargain. – KILUSANG MAYO UNO <kilusangmayouno.publicinfo@gmail.com>
