ILOILO City – The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) has collected volumes of garbage far more than expected over the week of Christmas celebrations in this city.
According to CENRO head Neil Ravena, they have already expected a huge increase in garbage collection volume in the central business district and downtown area.
“We are expecting tani mga 30 to 40 tons. But as of now, daw mga 50 tons ang increase sang aton nga volume sang basura, so amo ina ang gina-monitor naton subong,” Ravena said.
He added that based on the monitoring, the garbage collection reached 2.9 million kilograms from Dec. 18 to 25.
“Ang gin-monitor ko gid ang halin Dec. 18 up to Dec. 25. So based sa amon nga monitoring, galab-ot na kita sa 425 tons. Sang nagligad daw 370 [tons], more or less 40 to 50 tons ang increase naton… Naglab-ot kita mga 2,000 tons, so meaning, two million kilograms ang aton na-collect sang sini nga week sang December,” Ravena added.
He noted that it is to be expected since vending and economic activities increased, especially the volume of plastics, packaging materials, rotten fruits, organic products from markets, and wrappers.
“Sa subong may nagakuha sang aton plastic, so gina-separate naton kag gina-segregate. At the same time, nag-increase naman aton organic waste, gina-segregate man na naton kay aton ini siya i-composting process sa aton nga sanitary landfill, this is also part sang waste diversion naton,” he said.
Meanwhile, waste from the central business district was also sent to the Material Recovery Facility.
“Damo sang recyclable materials dira so damo pa aton mapuslan,” said Ravena./PN
