Suspect in Cathedral theft denies allegations

BACOLOD City – The suspect in the theft of the monstrance of San Sebastian Cathedral has denied the allegations against him.

In a radio interview yesterday morning, Edmar Yanson, a resident of the city’s Barangay 12, claimed he was only picked up by the police.

Yanson further claimed that he was at his friend’s house, which was beside his own, at the time of the robbery at the cathedral’s adoration chapel.

The monstrance, a vessel in which the consecrated eucharistic host is carried during processions and is displayed during certain devotional ceremonies, was valued at around P30,000.

Major Elmer Bonilla, Police Station 1 commander, said Yanson allegedly planned to sell off the monstrance.

The monstrance was wrapped in a bag and left at the cathedral’s gates, where it was discovered on Sunday morning, Dev. 31, 2023.

A background check by Police Station 1 revealed that Yanson did not have a criminal record. Although his name floated in other theft incidents in their area, there were no formal charges. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
