ILOILO City – A high school basketball player made headlines after dropping 73 points during an elimination round game in the Iloilo Private Schools Athletic Association (ILOPRISAA) secondary boys basketball meet.
Jid Locsin, a point guard of Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix, finished with 73 points, including eight three-pointers, during their 115-41 victory over Assumption Iloilo on Wednesday.
Red Phoenix head coach Vincent Conlu said the explosive game of the La Carlota City, Negros Occidental native was not surprising as he was working hard on his offense during their trainings.
“He really has that ability to score, he has been working on that,” Conlu told Panay News on Thursday. “And siguro maganda lang din ‘yung gising niya, that’s why he was able to score 73 points.”
Conlu also revealed that Grade 11 Locsin is on the radar of De La Salle University Green Archers head coach Michael “Topex” Robinson who saw him during last year’s Palarong Pambansa.
“Actually, kinausap siya ni coach Topex last year, but he was not yet ready to go to Manila so he decided to stay with us,” Conlu said. “Also, we are looking for a school kung saan he will have an opportunity to showcase his talents.”
“But, for now, our focus is defending our ILOPRISAA championship and then hopefully being able to represent the Western Visayas in the Palarong Pambansa. There is still a long way to go,” he added.
The Red Phoenix were the defending champions in the ILOPRISAA tournament after defeating St. Robert’s International Academy Panda Rockets in the finals last year, 79-62.
This year, a rematch between the Red Phoenix and the Panda Rockets in the finals is looming after they both swept their respective group stage matches.
The winner in the ILOPRISAA Meet is set to represent Iloilo City in the Regional Meet slated for later this month./PN
