ILOILO City – Native outriggers stood the test of skill and endurance as they navigated their colorful paraws (double-outrigger sailboats) through the waters off Iloilo City under the scorching heat of the sun during the highlight of the 51st Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta Festival.

Participants and spectators from all over the Philippines trooped to Villa Beach in Arevalo district yesterday to witness the culmination of the oldest and largest traditional sailboat race in Asia.

About 40 boatmen from various provinces in Western Visayas displayed their skill and speed when navigating their paraws past 8 a.m.

The blazing heat of the sun did not deter professional sailors and enthusiasts from witnessing the traditional sailboat race that featured colorful paraws as they positioned themselves along the course, which provided a thrilling spectacle of colorful sails against the backdrop of the sea.

In his speech, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the holding of the oldest sailing event in Asia is deeply rooted in the city’s history.

Treñas voiced optimism the festival will serve as a reminder for Ilonggos not just for paraw competition, but to showcase the enduring Ilonggo spirit.

“This festival is a platform to highlight our talents and skills that reflect the ingenuity of our forefathers. It symbolizes Iloilo City’s journey, marked by challenges and triumphs,” the mayor said.

He added: “Today, we honor the legacy of those who came before us, the courageous individuals who braved the waves; and we also celebrate the present, where this tradition continues to inspire and unite our city.”

Treñas also expressed his gratitude to Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI), which managed the event, Tatoy’s Manokan, and other partners for ensuring the success of the festival.

For his part, John Lex Bayombong, the festival chairperson, said he was amazed at how a simple tradition turned into such a grand festival.

“This celebration is not just a festivity, but it is a living testament to the vision and initiative of those who laid the foundation for this magnificent event,” said Bayombong.

He likened the paraw race to how Ilonggos navigate their lives with resilience amidst the unpredictable tides of life.

“We should remember that just as the paraws rely on the wind, we, too, draw strength from the collective breeze of our community. Our journey is marked by a shared determination to rise above the waves that test our strength,” said  Bayombong.

He thanked the Iloilo City Government, the IFFI, and other stakeholders for their dedication and tireless efforts to ensure the success of the festival.

The Paraw Regatta Race is the highlight of the Paraw Regatta Festival held annually in Iloilo City. More than a sporting event, it is also a celebration of the city’s maritime heritage and cultural traditions to showcase native boatmen’s skills and to celebrate their love for the sea./PN
