BACOLOD City – The city government is seeking partnerships with local pharmacies to bolster its Comprehensive Health Program (BacCHP).
The initiative, directed by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, aims to streamline the provision of medical assistance by purchasing necessary medicines directly through partnered pharmacies instead of disbursing cash.
According to Engineer Mae Cuaycong, the program’s focal person, this approach not only ensures control over the distribution of assistance but also prevents potential abuse.
“Sometimes, the system is susceptible to abuse, with individuals repeatedly seeking aid,” she explained.
The search for pharmacy partners comes as part of an effort to avoid monopolies and to potentially lower drug prices.
To date, one private hospital has expressed interest in partnering with the city, but Mayor Benitez is eager to engage more pharmacies to enhance competitive pricing.
In related developments, since the launch of the city’s “Bayad Agad” program on April 22 — designed to expedite the distribution of financial aid to Bacolod residents facing crises — a substantial portion of the funds has been allocated to medical cases, particularly for medicines. On April 29 alone, the program processed 230 transactions.
The financial aid provided is based on assessments by designated evaluators, with a minimum of P1,500 per transaction.
According to Cuaycong, in just one week following the launch, the P10 million allocated for the program was nearly depleted, leaving only about P1 million remaining. However, additional funds are expected soon.
Beneficiaries of the program are eligible to seek further assistance after a three-month interval./PN
