ILOILO City – Since 2022, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has made significant strides in improving educational infrastructure in Western Visayas.

According to DPWH Region 6 director, Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel, the department has constructed 280 new school buildings, which house a total of 1,088 classrooms, and repaired 60 existing school buildings, totaling 515 classrooms.

These construction projects involved an investment of approximately P3.483 billion for new school buildings and classrooms and an additional P317.15 million for repairs.

Oropel emphasized the impact of these projects, stating that the substantial construction and renovation efforts have significantly upgraded the school infrastructure, providing students with safe and functional learning environments.

He highlighted the critical nature of these improvements in addressing the classroom shortages and ensuring schools are equipped with necessary facilities.

“These new and improved buildings are a testament to our dedication to enhancing educational infrastructure and improving the quality of education for future generations,” Oropel added.

The regional director also noted the growing population in the region which increases the demand for more classroom space each year.

Despite the number of classrooms already constructed, there remains a potential shortage, underscoring the continuous need for further infrastructure development.

Oropel suggested that the Department of Education (DepEd) might consider allocating a significant budget in the future to address these ongoing needs. He clarified that the DPWH serves merely as an implementing arm for these constructions.

During a media interaction, when asked about the possibility of redesigning school buildings to make them more resilient, Oropel responded that the design process involves a collaborative effort between the DepEd and the DPWH.

He stressed the importance of discussing and determining necessary improvements for classroom instruction together./PN
