Don’t flirt with ‘FLiRT’

WITH THE FLiRT variant of COVID-19 emerging as a new threat, Health authorities have issued this advice: for the public to maintain strict adherence to established health protocols.

The Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 emphasizes the importance of good respiratory hygiene and the consistent use of facemasks, particularly in crowded places or when experiencing symptoms. This is especially crucial for our senior citizens and those with underlying health conditions.

Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray from DOH-6’s Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases (EREIDS) unit has pointed out that while the FLiRT variant has yet to be detected in Western Visayas, its rapid transmission capabilities, as noted by the World Health Organization, warrant caution. The FLiRT variant, an offshoot of the JN.1 and Omicron variants, spreads faster than previous strains, although it has not been associated with severe or critical symptoms thus far.

Our region’s proactive measures, including the continuous surveillance and monitoring efforts by DOH-6, are laudable. By sending specimens to the Philippine Genome Center and maintaining stringent reporting requirements for healthcare providers, we are staying ahead in the fight against this evolving virus. Moreover, the collaboration with the Bureau of Quarantine at all ports of entry ensures that we remain vigilant against potential cases entering from other countries.

Despite the uptick in cases, with a 123 percent increase in new infections recently, our healthcare system remains resilient. The occupancy rates for both ICU and non-ICU beds are manageable, reflecting our preparedness. However, this should not lead to complacency. The guidelines for home quarantine and facemask usage for positive cases must be strictly followed to prevent further spread.

The recent statistics of 212,111 total COVID-19 cases and 6,885 deaths in our region reminds us of the pandemic’s ongoing impact. It is essential for every individual to act responsibly. By adhering to health protocols, we not only protect ourselves but also contribute to the collective safety of our community.

Let us continue to practice good respiratory hygiene, wear our facemasks diligently, and support the health measures put in place by our authorities. In this fight against COVID-19, particularly with the emergence of the FLiRT variant, our vigilance and responsibility are our strongest weapons.
