GERMANY earned their place in the quarterfinals round after defeating Denmark, 2-0, in the Euro Cup 2024 round-of-16 on Saturday night (Sunday in the Philippines) at the BVB Stadion Dortmund in Dortmund, Germany.
Kai Havertz drew first blood for the Germans in the second half as he converted a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner penalty in the 53rd minute of the match.
Jamal Musiala increased Germany’s lead to 2-0 15 minutes later as he connected a right-footed shot from the left side of the box to the bottom right corner from an assist by Nico Schlotterbeck.
âWe played a super game â we had crazy fans again today,â Schlotterbeck said. âWeâre playing with euphoria, weâre playing with fun, and thatâs what the most beautiful thing about football is.â
The host Germany will play either Spain or Georgia in the quarterfinals round scheduled next weekend in Berlin.
Meanwhile, Switzerland kicked out defending champion Italy with a 2-0 beating in their round-of-16 encounter at the Olympiastadion Berlin in Germany.
Remo Freuler and Rubén Vargas scored a goal each in the two halves as Switzerland reached the quarterfinals round against either England and Slovakia.
Freuler opened the scoring for Switzerland in the 37th minute as he knocked down a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner from an assist by Vargas.
Vargas doubled the advantage early in the second half as he drilled a right-footed shot from the left side of the box to the right corner from a pass by Michel Aebischer.
Italyâs elimination means the defending champions has gone out in the round-of-16 for the third successive Euro after Portugal in 2021 and Spain in 2016./PN
