
MANILA – De La Salle University Green Archers claimed the 2024 World University Basketball Series crown after a 101-86 victory over Korea University on Monday night at Yoyogi National Stadium Second Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.
Henry Agunnane spearheaded the offense with 25 points to go with seven rebounds, while tournament MVP Kevin Quiambao added 15 points, 11 assists, and six rebounds for the Green Archers.
Michael Phillips also produced a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Vhoris Marasigan and Andrei Dungo contributed 14 and 10 markers, respectively, for DLSU.
Holding a slim 77-73 lead after three quarters, the Green Archers relied on inside conversions by Agunnane, Quiambao, Marasigan, and Dungo as they establish a 92-73 lead.
“It’s great to see our players stepping up, especially rookies like Vhoris Marasigan and Doy Dungo. Even Matt Rubico has shown a lot of promise,” Green Archers head coach Michael “Topex” Robinson said in an interview with Tiebreaker Times.
“We’re excited to see these new players reinforce our veterans. Moving forward, this is a valuable opportunity for us before the season begins,” added the one-time UAAP champion coach.
Prior to their win against Korea University, DLSU defeated Indonesia’s Perbanas Institute of Indonesia in the opening round, 117-71, before prevailing over the National Chengchi University in the semifinals, 87-82.
The Green Archers became the second Philippine-based team to rule WUBS after Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles ruled the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2022.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to represent the Philippines in this tournament. We seized the opportunity to compete against top college teams not only in Asia but also in the Pacific. It’s truly an honor for us to participate,”
Overall, this is the reigning UAAP men’s basketball tournament champions’ third offseason championship after previously ruling the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup and Pinoyliga./PN
