ILOILO City – Low-lying areas and villages in this city have been urged to closely monitor water levels as Tropical Storm Enteng intensified from a tropical depression.

Although Western Visayas is not on the path of the storm, it is enhancing the southwest monsoon rains.

Mayor Jerry Tren̈as has issued preparedness measures such as securing belongings, staying informed through reliable sources, and following evacuation orders if necessary, which are being emphasized to ensure the safety of the Ilonggo community.

The City Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) has advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert for potential flooding, especially with the expected heavy rainfall and strong winds associated with the storm.

In its 11 a.m. report yesterday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Enteng is forecast to reach severe tropical storm by this (Tuesday) afternoon or evening, and typhoon category by Thursday” in Luzon.

Teams from the Iloilo City Emergency Operations Center are also on standby to assist in any necessary evacuations or relief efforts.

“Strong winds will be experienced particularly along the coastal barangays.  The general public is advised to be vigilant on its effects like on trees, houses made of light materials resulting in flying debris, and fallen/ broken branches among others.  Possible flooding in low-lying areas due to persistent light to moderate rains may occur,” the advisory read.

Tren̈as suspended the face-to-face classes yesterday afternoon at all levels in both public and private educational institutions in Iloilo City.

The CDRRMC has activated its barangay emergency operations center and intensified information education, and communication advocacy to the public on security and safety measures.

The public is also advised to always take precautionary measures and follow preparedness measures by monitoring weather updates and never ignore rainfall warning alerts.

Ilonggos are also urged to store ready-to-eat food such as canned goods, instant noodles, water, and a first aid kit.

“Keep the following items handy in case of a power outage: battery-operated radio, flashlights, and spare batteries,” the advisory read.

Likewise, residents in low-lying areas are told to evacuate immediately upon orders from the city government./PN
