Bacolod evacuation center now an Mpox quarantine facility

BACOLOD City – The City Health Office (CHO) has designated the evacuation center in Barangay Vista Alegre as a temporary treatment and monitoring facility (TTMF) for potential monkeypox (Mpox) cases in the city.

Grace Tan, chief of the Environment Sanitation Division of the CHO, announced that the facility will be utilized in the event of a confirmed Mpox case, allowing for the isolation and care of patients requiring special attention.

Tan explained that preparations are already underway, including the mobilization of personnel and logistics to ensure the center is ready if necessary.

Over the past three weeks, four samples from male patients were sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) for Mpox testing. Of these, three have returned negative, while the result of the fourth test is still pending.

Patients confirmed positive for Mpox will be quarantined for a minimum of 21 days, according to Tan. The CHO is also working closely with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to secure additional testing kits and funds to expedite sample processing.

The Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) has been tapped to provide support for patients, particularly in terms of food provisions during their stay at the facility.

Tan emphasized the importance of public education to prevent the spread of Mpox, urging residents to be aware of the symptoms and practice preventive measures. These symptoms include a skin rash or lesions, fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, sore throat, headaches, and fatigue.

The CHO advises the public to follow proper respiratory etiquette, maintain good hygiene practices, ensure proper ventilation, and avoid close contact with individuals suspected of having Mpox.

Public awareness campaigns are being prioritized to help control the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of the community./PN
