ILOILO City – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is enhancing its efforts against cybercrime with the establishment of a new Digital Forensic Center (DFC) in Region 6.
The center, a first in the Visayas, is designed specifically to manage cybercrime investigations, as announced by NBI Western Visayas acting Regional Director Lawyer Jeremiah Sargado.
The DFC, with a construction budget of P27.7 million, is currently underway and expected to be operational within the next 10 months.
Once operational, the facility aims to bolster national security and improve the efficiency of solving cybercrime cases.
It will also foster enhanced cooperation with both local and international partners to better address digital offenses throughout the region.
In a related update, the NBI disclosed a decrease in cybercrime complaints this year, with 44 reported cases from January to August, compared to 84 during the same period in 2023.
The decline in cases, which predominantly involve social media libel and online scams, is attributed to increased public awareness and the agency’s transparent actions in cybercrime prevention. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency)
