ILOILO City – The Regional Maritime Unit 6 (RMU-6) has intensified its operations against illegal trade of wildlife and other endangered species.
Colonel Ervin John Provido, director of the RMU-6, said he received several reports against selling and possessing of endangered species in the region especially in Negros Occidental and its capital, Bacolod City.
“Based on the consistent reports reaching our office, there are some individuals who are involved in buy and sell activities. I had already sent order to all station commanders to monitor and conduct operations against individuals who are violating laws on endangered species,” said Provido.
On October 6, Provido said the RMU-6 arrested an alleged wildlife trafficker in Zone 6, Talisay City, Negros Occidental for violation of Section 27 of Republic Act 9147, or Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
The 28-year-old Ian Guillena, a resident of Purok Makawiwili, Barangay Punta Taytay, Bacolod City was collared after he sold a bird to an undercover personnel for P1,500.
The operation was in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 6.
Officers the RMU-6 seized 20 Java finch sparrows.
The RMU-6 urged the public to take an active role in wildlife conservation efforts.
