Iloilo City soon to unveil heritage district with underground cabling

ILOILO City – By December, the iconic Calle Real in Iloilo City’s historic downtown will emerge with a modernized look as the Underground Distribution System (UDS) nears the finish line, offering both aesthetic and practical upgrades.

With the city’s efforts to preserve its heritage and streamline its utilities, the century-old J.M. Basa Street is undergoing a significant transformation.

Roel Castro, president and chief executive officer of MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power), reported that the electrical aspect of the UDS is about 70 percent finished, with civil works completed.

The goal is to eliminate all visible power lines on this stretch by December, he said, noting that the remaining challenge lies with telecommunication companies moving their lines underground.

Collaboration is essential, as highlighted by Castro, who pointed out the role of the Public Utilities Group of Iloilo (PUGI), a network coordinating the utility companies’ efforts.

The cooperation with other utilities is vital to achieving a unified, streamlined aesthetic for this heritage area, he added.

The underground cabling is a strategic initiative by MORE Power and the Iloilo City government to enhance public safety, as well as improve the visual appeal of a bustling area rich in cultural landmarks. Not only will this reduce risks posed by severe weather or other hazards, but it also aligns with broader urban preservation goals.

Initiated last year, the project spans from Arroyo and J.M. Basa Streets through Plaza Libertad to Zamora Street’s corner, paving the way for a new era of urban utility management while preserving the character of Iloilo’s most cherished historic district.
