ILOILO – A 59-year-old farmer was shot to death by his neighbor in Barangay Sinogbuhan, San Joaquin town in this province on Monday night, November 4.
According to Captain Chrysler John Ledesma, chief of the San Joaquin Municipal Police Station, the victim identified as Nestor Vellojan allegedly went to the house of 52-year-old Jesus Sigue and attempted to shoot the latter using a 12-gauge homemade long-barrel shotgun. Vellojan missed his target as Sigue managed to duck in time.
Sigue retaliated, shooting Vellojan in the stomach, Ledesma said.
The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Investigation showed that the two men had a long-standing dispute. Seven years ago, Sigue reportedly killed Vellojan’s cow, which had led to tension between them ever since, police said.
After the incident, Sigue voluntarily surrendered, along with his 12-gauge shotgun, to Barangay Captain Edgardo Napata.
The suspect is now detained at the San Joaquin police station and will face homicide charges./PN
