ILOILO City – The 2024 Ilonggo Christmas Parol of Hope, a celebrated tradition symbolizing resilience, hope, and unity among Ilonggos, officially lit up yesterday, December 1. The initiative, spearheaded by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) – Iloilo Chapter, in collaboration with the Iloilo City Government, has been a highlight of the holiday season since its inception in 2019.

Over 1,000 colorful parols now adorn Diversion Road (Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue) and General Luna Street, with plans to extend the displays to major roads leading to neighboring towns. These parols, crafted by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the Iloilo City District Jail Male Dormitory in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district, serve a dual purpose: brightening the city and supporting the livelihood of PDLs through income-generating projects.

“This initiative supports the livelihood project of the BJMP (Bureau of Jail Management and Penology), providing income opportunities for the persons deprived of liberty, and contributes to future PCCI CARES Projects. This year, we aim to spread the light of hope even further across our province,” said Felix Tiu, chairman of PCCI Iloilo, during the lighting ceremony.

Acting Iloilo City’s Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon highlighted the deeper significance of the parols in his speech.

“The Ilonggo Christmas Parol of Hope serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for everyone, especially our PDLs at the BJMP. Through this project, we provide income opportunities to our brothers and sisters striving for second chances in life. As a local government unit, we are committed to offering these opportunities by steadfastly supporting this initiative,” he said.

Jail warden, Jail Supt. Richard M. Servano, also emphasized the program’s impact on the PDLs: “This meaningful initiative has provided our PDLs with an opportunity to create Christmas lanterns, not only to showcase their talents and creativity but also to offer them a dignified source of livelihood.”

The Ilonggo Christmas Parol of Hope continues to shine brightly, not just as festive décor but as a testament to the community’s compassion and commitment to inclusivity and second chances./PN
