MANILA – New deals entered by Metro Rail Transit (MRT) should see suspension, said militant group Bayan Muna.

Bayan Muna said MRT’s previous deals must also be investigated.

The transport system has been experiencing a series of technical problem almost daily, giving the riding public “too much inconvenience,” said Cong. Neri Colmenares.

“We need to see and examine all the contracts involving the MRT. It seems we are being duped and short-changed,” he added.

For his part, Cong. Carlos Zarate, citing rail experts, said the MRT should still be working well because it has been operating for only 15 years.

Light Rail Vehicles like MRT can be used up to 35 years if properly maintained, he stressed.

He described the country’s MRT services “horrible.”

The representative said he will ask the House committees on transportation and good government and public accountability to summon past and present operations and maintenance providers of MRT.

“The issue should not be taken lightly. MRT passengers have suffered long enough,” Zarate said.

Malacañang, meanwhile, assured the public that the Department of Transportation and Communications is working improve the electric trains./PN
