ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. is set to run unopposed in the May 12, 2025 national and local elections following the withdrawal of his sole opponent.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) – Iloilo Province confirmed that Mary Frances Chloe Noble, a 28-year-old resident of Barangay Baybay Sur, Miag-ao town, personally appeared at their office on December 26, 2024 to formally withdraw her candidacy for governor.

Comelec did not disclose the reason behind Noble’s decision.

According to Comelec guidelines, substitutions due to withdrawal are no longer allowed after October 8, 2024. Exceptions, such as disqualification or death, are permitted only until noon on election day.

“After October 8, we will not accept substitution due to withdrawal, even for candidates from political parties. Withdrawal will stand without substitution,” explained Comelec Region 6 Director Atty. Dennis Ausan.

Noble filed her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) as an independent candidate for governor on October 8, 2024, the last day of the filing period.

“I’m running for governor of Iloilo. I hope voters will support me. I’m willing to provide a better future for our people,” Noble said during her candidacy announcement.

She cited her previous experience running for barangay captain, although she did not win.

Meanwhile, Governor Defensor filed his COC under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) on October 6, 2024, seeking his third and final term.

With Noble’s withdrawal, Defensor is now assured of retaining his position as governor for another term./PN
