BACOLOD City – The Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Bacolod City and Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) conducted a simultaneous launching of the Comelec checkpoints on Sunday, January 12, the start of the election period for May 12 polls.

The activity also officially kicked off the Comelec gun ban.

Comelec-Bacolod acting election officer Revo Sorbito yesterday said that the conduct of checkpoints on the first day of the election period was peaceful despite a report of an individual arrested for violation of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition) in relation to the Comelec gun ban.

Alias “Archie”, 24, a resident of Barangay Mansilingan here, was caught in plain view at around 11:35 p.m. on Sunday by operatives of Police Station 6 in Barangay 28.

Recovered from him was an improvised gun or pugakhang with ammunition.

Following this, Sorbito reminded the public, particularly gun holders, that the permit to carry firearms outside of residence is currently suspended.

He added that the Comelec gun ban is being implemented to maintain safety and security during the election period from January 12 to June 11 this year./PN
