ILOILO City – This southern metropolis has reached a significant milestone with the implementation of the Underground Distribution System (UDS), a project aimed at enhancing the city’s aesthetics and public safety.

The initiative has drawn praise from local leaders, including Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, and former senator Franklin Drilon, for transforming key areas like Calle Real into a showcase of heritage and modern urban planning.

Revitalizing Calle Real

Mayor Treñas celebrated the project’s impact, emphasizing the enhanced beauty of Iloilo City’s historic district.

“We are happy with the initial success of the Underground Distribution System in Iloilo City. With Calle Real now free from the clutter of overhead wires and cables, we can fully appreciate the beauty of our heritage buildings and the charm of our historic district,” he said.

The mayor also thanked stakeholders, including MORE Power, telecommunications companies, and cable providers, for their collaborative efforts.

“This project is an example of what we can achieve as a united community,” he added.

Expansion and legislative backing

The success of the UDS in Calle Real has inspired plans for expansion to other locations, including the plaza complexes, Sunburst Park, Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue, and other additional heritage sites.

The project’s progress is guided by an ordinance passed in 2023 under Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon’s leadership, mandating all public utility providers to move their electrical and telecommunication cables underground in designated areas.

“This ordinance is a testament to our commitment to making Iloilo City not just a hub for innovation, but also a beautiful and safe place to live, work, and visit,” said Vice Mayor Ganzon.

Commendation from Drilon

Former senator Franklin Drilon applauded the collaboration between the Iloilo City government and private sector stakeholders like MORE Power, which played a critical role in the project’s success.

“I laud the Iloilo City government for working hand-in-hand with the private sector, specifically with MORE Power, to ensure the success of this vital infrastructure development,” Drilon stressed.

The UDS has not only beautified the city but also addressed public safety concerns by eliminating hazards associated with overhead wires.

This transformative project positions Iloilo City as a model for sustainable and innovative urban development, attracting both local and international attention.

As Iloilo City continues its modernization while preserving its cultural heritage, the Underground Distribution System exemplifies its commitment to becoming a premier destination for residents and visitors alike./PN
