ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas commended Land Transportation Office (LTO) regional director Atty. Gaudioso P. Geduspan II for his swift action against a drunk driver who crashed into decorative flower pots along Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue on December 27, 2024.

Geduspan revoked the driver’s license, citing the importance of accountability in upholding road safety.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious threat to public safety, and we appreciate LTO’s prompt investigation and resolution of this case,” Treñas said.

The driver, identified only as Danny, admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the incident.

On his way to Barangay Calubihan, Jaro district after a drinking session, he reportedly became confused and attempted a U-turn, plowing flower pots serving as traffic barriers along Diversion Road in Mandurriao district.

The flower pots, installed as part of the city’s holiday traffic safety measures, were damaged, prompting a police investigation. The Iloilo City Police Office quickly apprehended the driver.

LTO-6’s swift action

Following a recommendation from the LTO Legal Office, Director Geduspan approved the revocation of Danny’s license.

“LTO-6 will not hesitate to revoke licenses if it is proven that the incident was caused without any valid reason,” Geduspan stressed, reaffirming the agency’s zero-tolerance policy on reckless driving.

Treñas earlier directed the City Legal Office to file charges against the driver for damages to public property and endangering public safety.

He earlier expressed his outrage, saying, “such behavior endangers lives and compromises the safety of our city.”

Treñas commended the swift action of both the LTO-6 and the Iloilo City Police Office. He also announced a personal reward for the officers involved in apprehending the driver, sending a strong warning to others:

“Let this serve as a strong warning to all drunk drivers: such actions will not be tolerated.”

Reiterating the city’s commitment to road safety, Treñas urged drivers to act responsibly and adhere to traffic rules to prevent similar incidents.

“We are committed to keeping our roads safe and protecting public property,” he said./PN
