BACOLOD City – The City Health Office (CHO) here has expressed concern over the rising number of dengue cases early this month.

CHO data showed that 22 cases were recorded from January 5 to 11. It previously listed only six cases from January 1 to 4.

Barangays Singcang-Airport and Villamonte logged the highest number of cases at three each.

Dr. Grace Tan, chief of the CHO’s Environmental Sanitation Division, said despite the sudden surge in cases, no fatality was recorded.

“The sudden increase was due to the frequent rainfall as well as the community seemed to already forget practicing the 4S strategy against dengue, particularly the searching and destroying of mosquito breeding grounds,” Tan said.

City Health Officer Ma. Carmela Gensoli echoed the same.

“People do not cooperate. They forgot to practice the 4 o’clock habit which is one way of eliminating the dengue-carrying mosquitoes,” Gensoli said.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily the Aedes aegypti species.

Symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. In severe cases, it can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be life-threatening./PN
