MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is considering the possibility of extending the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Marbil ahead of the 2025 midterm polls.
In a media interview, the Chief Executive said there is a “very strong argument” to keep Marbil as PNP chief beyond February 7, or the day of his mandatory retirement for stability’s stake.
“There is a very strong argument that it would not be good for stability, especially to change the chief PNP in the middle of a campaign period and approaching an election period,” Marcos said.
“So pinag-aaralan namin. But I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on. At the very least, until after the elections,” he added.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said last week that Marbil might be extended for another four months due to the need to oversee the security preparations for the May midterm elections.
A member of the Philippine Military Academy’s “Sambisig” Class of 1991, Marbil was named as the country’s top cop on April 1, 2024.
Marbil will retire on February 7 upon turning 56, the mandatory retirement age for those in the military and police./PN
