Addressing the surge in dengue cases

THE PHILIPPINES faces a significant public health challenge with the recent surge in dengue cases which demand urgent attention and action. The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a staggering 40% increase in dengue cases compared to the same period last year. With 28,384 cases reported nationwide as of February 1, 2025, and outbreaks declared in areas like Quezon City, the situation is nothing short of alarming.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, poses a severe threat to public health. Quezon City has reported 1,769 cases and ten tragic deaths, including eight minors. The disease’s rapid spread has prompted eight other local government units in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon to consider declaring outbreaks soon. This rise in cases can be attributed to frequent rains, which create stagnant water — ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Preventive measures are essential to combat this growing threat. Public awareness campaigns, community involvement, and government intervention play crucial roles in dengue prevention. Individuals must take proactive steps to protect themselves and their communities. Using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and eliminating mosquito breeding sites are simple yet effective ways to reduce the risk of infection.

The government must prioritize the allocation of resources to areas most affected by the outbreak. Ensuring access to medical care, conducting fumigation drives, and distributing mosquito nets can help mitigate the impact of the disease. Additionally, investing in research and development of vaccines and treatments will provide long-term solutions to this recurring problem.

We must also address the root causes of the dengue outbreak, such as inadequate waste management and poor sanitation. By improving infrastructure and promoting sustainable practices, we can create a healthier environment less conducive to mosquito breeding.

In these challenging times, it is crucial for the community to come together and support one another. By raising awareness, taking preventive measures, and advocating for government action, we can effectively combat the dengue outbreak and protect the health and well-being of our fellow Filipinos.

The surge in dengue cases reminds us of the importance of vigilance and collective action. As we face this public health crisis, let us unite in our efforts to prevent the spread of dengue and ensure a safer, healthier future for all. (totingbunye2000@gmail.com}/PN
