MANILA – There is no definite timeline yet for the planned meeting between President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and United States President Donald Trump.
Both sides expressed openness to meet but no specific time has been set, according to Presidential Communications Office’s Undersecretary Claire Castro.
“They expressed their intention to pursue po a leaders’ meeting at an appropriate time,” Castro said in an interview with GMA’s Unang Balita on Thursday morning.
Philippine Ambassador to the United States, Jose Manuel Romualdez, previously disclosed a possible in-person meeting between President Marcos and President Trump.
Upon his return to the White House, Trump enacted an executive order that temporarily halted all US aid for a period of 90 days while a review was conducted.
Nevertheless, security and defense assistance from the US to the Philippines was specifically identified as one of the exceptions to this freeze order.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has previously reaffirmed the United States’ “ironclad” commitment to the Philippines in light of China’s ongoing aggression in the contested regions of the West Philippine Sea./PN
