ILOILO – A misunderstanding fueled by jealousy led to a group of minors attacking a 30-year-old man on esplanade in Barangay Poblacion Ilawod, Passi City in this province on Sunday night, March 9.
The altercation reportedly began when the 16-year-old alias “Ben” saw the victim, alias “Mark,” putting his arm around the former’s mother, alias “Wei,” while they were walking along the road.
Police said this act allegedly triggered Ben’s anger, prompting him to punch Mark.
Seeing this, seven other individuals who were with Ben joined in and attacked Mark. At the time of the incident, Ben was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Benjo Clarite, chief of the Passi City Police Station, said the situation escalated quickly but was ultimately resolved after both parties admitted that it was a mere misunderstanding.
“This was an unfortunate incident, but both sides later agreed that it was a case of miscommunication. Fortunately, no one sustained any injuries,” Clarite said.
Officers of the Passi City Police Station meanwhile confirmed that their Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, which was patrolling the area, immediately responded to the altercation.
While some of the minors involved managed to flee, police arrested several individuals at the scene.
Yesterday, March 10, Passi City Police Station’s Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) and investigators, along with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) personnel, identified all the parties involved. The minors involved and their parents were brought to the police station for legal processing.
Following a thorough investigation and discussions, police confirmed that the incident was merely a case of misunderstanding. No formal charges were filed as all parties reached an amicable settlement.
The CSWDO also educated the minors and their families on the legal consequences of such actions and the importance of proper guidance for children.
Following the incident, Passi City police urged the public not to spread misinformation.
“Our priority is to guide and educate minors and their families to prevent similar incidents in the future. We have officers strategically deployed 24/7 to maintain peace and security in the city,” read part of the police station’s statement.
They also called on the city residents to remain cooperative and report any disturbances through proper legal channels rather than resorting to speculation./PN
