BACOLOD City – Twenty learners from Bubog Elementary School in Talisay City, Negros Occidental were rushed to hospital yesterday, March 26, alleged food poisoning after consuming expired chocolates.
Dr. Joey Villarosa, the medical officer for Negros Occidental Schools Division Office, confirmed the incident, stating that the affected students included 15 Grade 5 pupils, three Grade 4 pupils, and two Grade 3 pupils.
The kids were transported to Talisay City Health Office after complaining of stomach pain and vomiting.
According to Ian Arnold Arnaez, spokesperson of Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division-Negros Occidental, said the said pupils were immediately treated and were in stable condition.
Initial investigations revealed that one pupil brought the chocolate bars, believed to be imported, which were consumed by the affected children. However, it remained unclear whether the chocolates were sold or given away by the said pupil.
Upon inspection, the remaining unconsumed chocolate bars were found to have expired, with a listed expiry date of September 17, 2024.
Dr. Villarosa emphasized that the DepEd has a policy regulating the sale of food in schools, requiring that food items be purchased only from school canteens. The policy, she said, also prohibits the sale of carbonated and high-sugar beverages and mandates that sealed food products must bear the Sangkap Pinoy seal.
Authorities were continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances of the incident. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
