Province to validate list of boat recipients

ILOILO – The provincial government is set to validate the list of recipients of fishing boats donated by various sectors to victims of super typhoon “Yolanda.”

Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said he had received reports that some recipients got two to three fishing boats each.

On the other hand, other typhoon-victim fisherfolk who were supposed to receive one boat had not received any, and some who were not supposed to receive were given.

These may have happened because of donors, whether private or non-government organizations, went directly to the typhoon-hit towns and distributed fishing boats without informing any local government unit, Defensor explained.

He alerted the local government units and their municipal social welfare officers and municipal agriculturists to come up with lists of coastal barangays especially in northern Iloilo that had been hit by the super typhoon, as well as lists of boat beneficiaries.

Defensor said the consolidated list will show how many of 10,000 fishing boats have already been distributed and how many are still needed.

The boat distribution is in line with the provincial government’s “Adopt-A-Fisherman” aimed at helping fisherman victims of typhoon Yolanda cope./PN
