ILOILO City – A team from a humanitarian organization going to Barangay Paga, Leon, Iloilo for a medical mission was strafed in Barangay Mayang, Tubungan town around 3:45 p.m. yesterday.
Troops of the Philippine Army’s 82nd Infantry Battalion that were accompanying the “Operation Blessing” team fired back until the rebels withdrew, said Major Ray Tiongson, spokesperson of the 3rd Infantry Division.
None from the civilians were hurt but some vehicles sustained damage.
There were no casualties on the part of the government soldiers, too.
The attackers were believed to be New People’s Army rebels.
There were an estimated five rebels, said Tiongson.
The firefight lasted for five minutes.
The Army immediately launched hot pursuit operations, said Tiongson./PN
