ILOILO City – A Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member of Badiangan, Iloilo admitted to Panay News he shot a 17-year-old boy in the evening of July 18 in Barangay Aguisipan, but only in self-defense.
Guilfred Oremo, 38, told this writer he would surrender to the police after talking to the family of the victim who is now under treatment at the Western Visayas Medical Center for a gunshot wound on the waist.
Oremo said he had never intended to shoot Dave (not his real name) and would never have done so had the victim not attempted to grab his gun.
If Oremo were to be believed, he was on his way home from a store when somebody shouted, “Inaway (Who wants a fight)!”
As the chairman of the SB’s peace and order Committee, Oremo said, he took it upon himself to calm down the source of the offensive shout, the minor who was allegedly drunk and was with another drunk boy.
That done, he resumed walking home, said Oremo.
When he reached home, however, Oremo said he received a text message from a cousin that the two drunk lads were shouting again. So he went back on his motorcycle.
This time, Oremo said, the two were targeting a streetlight with a slingshot,
“I felt disrespected,” Oremo explained as to why he pulled his gun to fire a warning shot.
It was allegedly at that point when the two attempted to snatch his gun, which fired during their grappling and hit the 17-year-old boy.
The victim’s companion, Onyok (full name withheld), on the other hand, told a different story.
He said that after they had consumed alcoholic drinks at the victim’s house, they went out to buy more drinks.
He said that on coming back, the suspect fired his gun six times. One of the bullets hit the victim./PN
