MANILA – Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdongreturns to the national men’s footballscene — this time as one of the assistant coaches of mentor ThomasDooley.
The decorated Ilonggobooter was appointedone of the Philippine Azkals’ assistant coaches for the 2016 AseanFootball Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup from Nov. 19 to 26, according to Team Manager Dan Palami.
Caligdong will be with Azkalsin October when the latter battles Bahrain ina friendly at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.
“As an Azkals legend, Chieffy’s presence and experience will come inhandy as he tries to pass it on to younger players come the SuzukiCup,” Palami said in a statement.
The 33-year-old Caligdong started his national team stint in 2004, playing in various tournaments here and abroad. He has a totalof 12 international goals before retiring in November 2014.
Caligdong led Azkals to two championships in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Philippine Peace Cup. He was hailed as a “golden boot” once in 2011Long Teng Cup, where Azkals finished as a runner-up.
After retirement, he remained active in football as playing assistant coach for GreenArchers United Globe Football Club in United Football League.
Caligdong, who obtained a “C” Coaching License in 2014, is also thecurrent head coach of the national Under-14 team./PN
