BACOLOD City – A “legislative action” is the best way to secure the status of the Negros Island Region, said Negros Occidental vice governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.
He plans to ask the SangguniangPanlalawigan of Negros Occidental to pass a resolution seeking the creation of the Negros Island Region “through legislative action in Congress.”
The island region was created by virtue of Executive Order (EO) No. 183, which then President Benigno Aquino III signed on May 29, 2015.
A law is “stronger” than an executive order, Lacson said.
According to the vice governor, there is a possibility that the present or future administrations would revoke EO No. 183 and dissolve Negros Island Region as a result.
“A law [as] foundation of [the island region], I believe, will be stronger,” said Lacson. “Right now [there is only] an executive order, which I feel can be killed by present or future administrations.”
Fears on the Negros Island Region’s dissolution started when island region’s P42.2-billion proposed budget for 2017 was not included in the national government budget.
Lacson said they will rally for support from Negros Oriental and Visayan bloc officials.
Negros Oriental governor RoelDegamo said he and Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. already lobbied for the retention of the island region./PN
