BACOLOD City –Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo is the chairman of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in Negros Island Region.
Degamo took oath before House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, the party’s secretary-general.
He was installed before the massoath-taking of around 500 to 700 new PDP-Laban members in the province.
Alvarez inducted them at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City on Thursday.
Most mayors, vice mayors, councilors, and barangay captains in Negros Oriental were members of the ruling party, Degamo claimed.
He said he is happy President Rodrigo Duterte, through the House speaker, trusted him to be the party’s regional leader.
Originally scheduled today, the mass oath-taking of new PDP-Laban members in Negros Occidental was moved to Oct. 1.
Asked to comment on the decision of several officials from two local parties — Love Negros and United Negros Alliance — to join PDP-Laban, Negros Occidental 3rd District Rep. Alfredo Benitez said, “It’s time to get down and work together.”
“Remember, elections are over, so there is no distinction — politically — at this point,” he said. “It’s not time to talk about politics. It’s time to get down and work.”
Any rivalry “will come into play in the next election,” said the congressman. “But at the moment, we’re working for the province and the country.”/PN
