BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod urged the City Health Office (CHO) to raise awareness on Zika and how to prevent infection.
The CHO already confirmed there is no Zika infection or death in Bacolod.
The city council wants the health office to “institute precautionary measures” to prevent any infection.
According to the councilors, the World Health Organization declared Zika a public health emergency.
Likewise, the Department of Health reported on Sept. 5 a woman from Iloilo City tested positive for the Zika virus, the first confirmed local transmission in the Philippines, they said in a resolution.
Zika is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedesmosquitoes.
It has been found that Zika infection among pregnant women may lead to certain birth defects.
The disease’s symptoms — which closely resemble dengue’s — include mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, malaise or headache, muscle and joint pain, which could last for two to seven days.
“The city government should be proactive in implementing vectorcontrol strategies aimed at reducing Aedes mosquito populations [to prevent] a potential public health risk,”read part of the resolution.
Even in the absence of any Zika case, CHO head Ma. Carmela Gensoli urged communities to keep their surroundings clean and apply the 4S strategy to prevent both dengue and Zika.
4S includes search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; self-protection measures; seek early consultation; and say no to indiscriminate fogging.
Dengue is deadlier than Zika, Gensoli clarified.
She said the CHO is now conducting an information campaign in the barangays regarding Zika and how to prevent it./PN
